The history of Golf and Coorg goes back a few hundred years, ever since the British introduced it as a sport for leisure and fellowship. With time, the region witnessed the emergence of golf clubs that were rich in tradition and blessed by nature.  Post independence, the sport gained widespread popularity and it soon became the sport of choice for the residents of Coorg.

Nestled amongst the rolling hills in madikeri-Coorg, is the picturesque Mercara downs golf club. It was officially given clearance to operate as a 9-hole golf course in the year 1914, and thereon the club has evolved to become one of the most naturally designed golf courses in this part of the world.

The dawn of the 21st century saw the club transform into its current avatar and thus began a new journey, which is bound to rewrite the legacy of the Mercara downs golf club. The year 2000 saw the new clubhouse being built, this was followed by all 18 holes being converted from browns to well contoured greens in 2007.
